چکیده
Anthropogenic disturbance has been demonstrated to affect the behavior of beach-nesting birds, yet energetic consequences recreational activities have received less attention. Because precocial chicks are often displaced as a result events, lower access food may lead fitness. We studied influence site characteristics and human on behavior, habitat use, growth rate, survival piping plover in New Jersey, portion Atlantic Coast population that continues demonstrate poor demographic output. Sites varied levels high-quality foraging habitat, which two critical components fledging success. found compared with bayside at sites without such experienced higher rates anthropogenic disturbance, spent time moist-substrate habitats, more upland dunes. Foraging were greatest for oceanside intertidal zone access. Further, overall chick reared Chick increased age, decreased increasing precipitation, availability. Human was likely limiting opportunities open public, an apparent effect rate. Maintaining is free activity through restoration, supplementary food, or beach closures could help increase reproductive success Jersey.

Age-Related Survival and Behavior of Snowy Plover Chicks
Precocial young often experience high mortality prior to achieving flight, especially in the first days after hatching. We quantified relationships between chick age, survival, behavior, and response to natural and anthropogenic danger for the threatened Western Snowy Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus) in coastal northern California, USA. Plover chicks were most likely to die in the first...
متن کاملViability of piping plover Charadrius melodus metapopulations
The metapopulation viability analysis package, vortex, was used to examine viability and recovery objectives for piping plovers Charadrius melodus, an endangered shorebird that breeds in three distinct regions of North America. Baseline models indicate that while Atlantic Coast populations, under current management practices, are at little risk of near-term extinction, Great Plains and Great La...
